Memory Island ("we," "us") is a spaced-repetition study app. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, how it's used and shared, where it's stored, and the rights you have over it. We follow Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA); PIPEDA also applies to commercial personal-information flows outside Alberta or Canada.
Account information — email address, display name, and profile photo, from Google Sign-In or email/password signup via Firebase Authentication.
Content you create — decks, cards, collections, images, and text you save in Quick Jot. Text pasted solely to generate cards is processed for that request and is not saved by Memory Island unless you separately save it.
Study activity — spaced-repetition scheduling data, session results, mastery/status per card, streaks, and achievements.
Exam outcome, if you provide it — your target certification exam, scheduled exam date, and a self-reported pass/fail result (a professional credentialing outcome), along with a snapshot of your readiness stats at the time you report it. Used only in aggregate to check whether our readiness estimates actually predict real results — never shared publicly or tied to your name outside our own analysis.
Social features, if you use them — friend connections, questions and answers posted to the Questions peer-mentorship board, and participation in Toss the Fish multiplayer games.
Usage analytics — product-usage events (e.g. session completed, deck created) tied to your account. Our own copy is automatically deleted after 180 days; a copy is also sent to PostHog (see below), which follows PostHog's own retention policy.
Study reminders, if you turn them on — a browser push-notification token and/or your email address, used only to send you a daily nudge (at most once a day, per channel) when cards are due. Both are opt-in and off by default; each can be turned off any time in Settings, and every reminder email includes a one-click unsubscribe link.
On-Scene simulator activity, while it's in Beta — the actions you type or say during an On-Scene call, the AI's response, and your own thumbs-up/thumbs-down rating of that response. We review this to check and improve the AI's accuracy. You can turn this off any time in Settings → Your Data; turning it off stops future calls from keeping what you typed or said, while the app still works exactly the same.
To run the core product: scheduling your reviews, tracking mastery, generating AI study material from content you provide, and powering optional social features. Usage analytics help us understand what's working and what isn't so we can improve the product. On-Scene call activity, while it's in Beta, helps us check and improve how accurately the simulator responds.
Our Firestore database, AI provider, Cloudflare services, PostHog and Stripe may process personal information outside Canada, including in the United States. It may therefore be accessible under foreign law. We remain accountable for information handled by our service providers. Contact our privacy officer to obtain written information about our cross-border service-provider practices.
Cards, decks, and study progress are kept while your account is open, including if you move from Pro to Free. We do not delete your study library because a subscription ends.
Quick Jots are kept until you delete them. Once you turn a jot into cards, we automatically delete the source jot after 30 days. Text pasted only for an AI-generation request is not retained by Memory Island after that request.
Product analytics are deleted from our Firestore copy after 180 days; answer-event data used to improve study-quality measurement is deleted after two years. We retain only anonymous aggregate statistics after that.
On-Scene call activity, while it's in Beta, is kept for up to 24 months for the accuracy review described above, then deleted.
Deletion and legal records — when you delete your account, we remove your production account data, saved content, study attempts, collaboration references, and uploaded media. Limited provider backups and security logs may expire on their own retention schedules. We keep billing and tax records only as required by law, and breach records for at least 24 months.
Access to your data is scoped per-account by database security rules; account-level fields like plan and admin status can't be modified by client requests. No system is perfectly secure — see our breach-response commitments below.
Memory Island isn't directed at children and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the applicable age of consent in your jurisdiction).
If we materially change what we collect or how we use it, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where practical, notify you directly.
Contact our privacy officer first at support@memoryisland.study. If you're not satisfied with our response, you can file a complaint with Alberta's Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner or, where PIPEDA applies, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
By creating an account or using Memory Island, you agree to these terms and to the Privacy Policy above.
Memory Island is a spaced-repetition study platform. Features, pricing, and available content may change as the product develops.
As between you and Memory Island, you retain your rights in the cards, decks, collections, and notes you create; we do not claim ownership of them. AI output may not itself qualify for copyright protection. By publishing a deck or collection for others to discover, you grant us a license to host and display that content to other users for that purpose. You're responsible for making sure content you upload (including protocol documents used for AI generation) is yours to use.
Cards generated by AI may contain errors. Review generated content before relying on it — especially content used to prepare for a professional certification exam. Memory Island is a study aid, not a substitute for official course material, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any certifying body.
Don't use the service to upload identifiable patient information, confidential workplace material, unlawful content, or material that infringes others' rights. Don't attempt to access accounts or data that aren't yours.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.
The service is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. To the extent permitted by law, we aren't liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including exam outcomes.
These terms are governed by the laws of Canada and the province in which you reside.
We'll update the date at the top of this page if these terms change materially.
